Chapter Thirteen: Clark

“Can I get you anything to drink, Ms. Levin?” Connor asked Nina. “There's tea and coffee in the lounge upstairs, or I can run to Starbucks if you prefer something fancier. There's also a great smoothie shop right on campus if you wanted something healthy—”

Nina chuckled at the overeager boy.

“I am absolutely fine,” she told him. “But, it's very kind of you to offer.”

“Is the lighting okay in here? Professor Clark likes to work in the dark, usually, even though I always tell him he's straining his eyes.”

"The lighting is just perfect, Connor. Thank you. Once again, I'm going to have to insist that you call me Nina. I don't think I'm that much older than you, but when you call me Ms. Levin, it makes me feel like I'm at least twice your age.”

My teaching assistant blushed. “Right. My apologies, Nina. Are you sure there isn't anything you need right now? I can take notes for you. I have very nice handwriting.”

“For God’s sake, Connor, if you need something to do, you can grab my computer from upstairs and work on some data entry that I need done for an unrelated project,” I interrupted with a sigh.

“Right. Sorry. I'll go fetch that. I'll be right back.”

When Connor bustled out of the laboratory that Nina and I had claimed for performing FBI-related tasks, I let out another sigh. Connor, of course, knew the basic details of the case because, when Harry first came to me and proposed the partnership, I told him it wasn't something I was going to be able to keep from the student who I was mentoring. In fact, it would be a great teaching opportunity. Somehow, the agents agreed and they drafted up a separate non-disclosure agreement for Connor.

That didn't mean he was working the case, though. He was just an extra hand in case we needed something and he was, as always, very happy to help. Although, that afternoon, it felt more as if he were Nina's assistant instead of mine. He was sweet and doting, just one year younger than her and on track to earn his doctorate next year, but he treated her like a queen.

“He's adorable,” Nina murmured, her eyes fixed on the tiny sapphires in her hand, a magnifying loupe held to her face. “He reminds me of my junior mineralogists at the museum.”

“Chatty and overeager?” I muttered.

“No. I was going to say ‘endearingly passionate about science and admirably humble’.”

Internally, I flinched.

Why did I have to be such an asshole to everyone? Connor didn't deserve such a backhanded comment from me. He worked hard and he was a very good assistant, even if he was a bit much at times.

There was a part of me that wished I could be more like that, if I were being completely honest with myself. Kind without question. Trusting and sweet without worrying when the other shoe was going to drop. Connor was easily likable because he had those characteristics. Even though, I
